Man, Im on a roll here. Due to great feedback [from who?] and high
audience demand [not really], I decided to pursue my desire for truth
and logic by handing out my second "Stick to freakin' Basketball Award"
...in a two day period.
So the second installment of the "Stick to Freakin' Basketball Award" goes to the greatest himself, yes my friends, it goes to Michael Jordan, for the following statement:
When asked why he did not publicly support an African-American candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by North Carolina's favorite bigot, Jesse Helms, he smiled and said, "Republicans buy sneakers, too."
So, I had heard this statement before...and ever since creating this award, I feel it my duty to bring this stupidity to light. Michael Jordan has fallen down ten notches of respect within the past year or two, for a variety of reasons... but this statement alone accounts for five of those notches.
This really flies in the face of his endorsement for Bill Bradley in early 2000 as a presidential candidate. How can he support a man for president if what matters most to him is that people buy his shoes. Really, that makes him suspect...one can only speculate on how he decides to support one man and not another.
The reality is Bill Bradley is a good ole' boy in the basketball schoolhouse club, so it only makes sense that Michael Jordan help support a club member, I guess...which brings us to the conclusion that he should "Stick to freakin' Basketball!". After this one...Im not sure if he can really be called the greatest.
Really, Muhammad Ali is the greatest and should have won SportCentury Athlete of the Century. That's an athlete with true social concern.

Of course I voted for him, Phil...
he said he'd buy my shoes.
